Educator Resources

On this page, you’ll find a variety of resources to help you promote healthy eating at your service by:

  • Creating a positive and supportive mealtime environment

  • Engaging in meaningful conversations with children during meals

  • Supporting children through periods of fussy eating

  • Fostering a collaborative approach across your service team

These tools are designed to empower educators and staff to make healthy eating a natural and enjoyable part of everyday practice.

From here you will be able to print or save the resource to share with fellow educators.

Mealtimes

Creating a supporting and positive healthy eating environment at your service:

  • Positive mealtime environments
  • Supporting fussy eaters for educators
  • A whole of service approach

Mealtime conversation cards

Engaging in conversations with children at mealtimes offers valuable opportunities to:

  • Support language development and communication skills by encouraging children to use new vocabulary and sentence structures in a relaxed, natural setting

  • Promote social skills as children learn to take turns in conversation, express their needs, and show empathy towards others

  • Model positive behaviours, including healthy eating habits, good manners, and respectful interactions—reinforcing essential life skills in a meaningful context

  • Shift the focus away from eating. This can reduce mealtime pressure and encourage children to approach new foods at their own pace.

Healthy eating learning experiences

Healthy eating learning experiences support children to develop positive attitudes and habits around food from an early age. Through hands-on activities like food tastings, cooking, and gardening, children learn about nutrition in a fun, non-pressured way that encourages curiosity and openness—especially beneficial for fussy eaters.

These experiences also promote language development, social skills, and cultural understanding, while reinforcing healthy behaviours that align with the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Standard.
