Policies and Monitoring

Munch & Move encourages early childhood services to implement written policies, procedures or guidelines for nutrition, physical activity, screen time and breastfeeding (if your service has children aged <12 months).

Inclusion of these documents at your service aligns with the ACECQA National Quality Standard 2 (Element 2.1.3 – Healthy lifestyle), and further benefits your service by:

  • Providing a framework to promote and ensure best practice
  • Communicating the values and expectations of your services to families and staff
  • Ensuring consistent communication with families and staff about the procedures that are undertaken in your service
  • Providing practical information on how your service promotes child health

Why do we encourage early childhood services to report and monitor how they implement healthy eating (including breastfeeding), physical activity and appropriate use of screens?

Regular monitoring and reporting on these health behaviours enable services to evaluate whether their current practices align with national guidelines and the objectives of the Munch & Move program. This process helps identify what’s working well and what needs adjustment—whether it’s the menu, educator training or planning for fundamental movement skill practice.

Tracking healthy eating and physical activity practices also supports a culture of accountability and directly supports a service’s quality improvement efforts in alignment with the National Quality Standard (NQS).
